Essential Korean Phrases for Travel

Hi!

So you might have read from my last post, that I've recently been to Seoul. Technically it was a four-day "transit" so we didn't stay very long. It was my first time in Korea, and although the weather was far from desirable (more like a tourist's worst nightmare really) it didn't stop us from enjoying the sights of Seoul. Except for the Namsan Tower. Guess we'll have to come back for that! (haha ;D) I would love to explore Korea more in the future (not just Seoul).

Now for what the post is all about!

Btw: I'm a learner of Korean, not a native speaker. However, I am a fellow traveller/learner, so here I am sharing my knowledge with you :D Here are some essential phrases you might want to keep in mind as a tourist in Korea!

* "Key Words" are the most crucial/focal words of the sentences.

1. 화장실이 어디에요? (hwa-jang-shil-i eo-di-e-yo?) = Where is the toilet?

2. 길을 잃어버렸어요. (gil-eul ee-reo-beo-ryeo-sseo-yo) = I've lost my way.

3. 길을 좀 가르쳐주세요. (gil-eul jom ga-reu-chyeo-ju-se-yo) = Please show (lit. tell/teach) me the way.

4. 지도가 있어요? (ji-do-ga i-sseo-yo?) = Is there a map? (Or "Do you have a map?")

5. 이거 얼마예요? (eol-ma ye-yo?) = How much is this?

6. 도와주세요! (do-wa ju-se-yo!) = Please help me!

7. 지하철 입구는 어디에요? (ji-ha-cheol ib-gu-neun eo-di-e-yo?) = Where is the subway entrance?

8. 저는 (name of place)에 가고 싶어요. (jeo-neun (name of place)-e ka-go shi-peo-yo) = I would like to go to (name of place).

9. 다시 말 해줄 수 있어요? (da-si mal hae-jul su i-sseo-yo?) = Could you please repeat that?

10. 천천히 말 해줄 수 있어요? (cheon-cheon-hi mal hae-jul su i-sseo-yo?) = Could you please speak slowly?

Helpful words to know:

화장실 (hwa-jang-shil) = toilet/washroom
이거 (i-geo) = this
그거/저거 (geu-geo/jeo-geo) = that (the latter is used when the object is located far from both the speaker and listener)
(don) = money
여권 (yeo-gwon) = passport
은행 (eun-haeng) = bank
(yak) = medicine
휴대폰 (hyoo-dae-pon) = cellphone
버스 (beo-seu) = bus
지하철 (ji-ha-cheol) = subway
택시 (taek-shi) = taxi
(yeok) = station
입구 (ib-gu) = entrance
출구 (chul-gu) = exit
(gil) = street/way

It really helps to learn Hangul, too. Although a lot of the signs in the city, maps, and trains have English translations, it will definitely come in handy :)
